Care and Personality of Buckskin

Your new leather items will last you for years with a little understanding of the material’s uniqueness, so please read thoroughly!

             1.  New items should be a bit tight to start, moccasins in particular.  Your toes should be all the way to the end of the shoe but not make “knuckles”.  They are more like socks than the shoes you are used to.  After wearing for 1 to 2 hours, you will feel the leather give and loosen as it absorbs body heat.  This will happen sort of all at once.

             2.  If it doesn’t give sufficiently in some spots, squirt that area with a spray bottle filled with cool water while wearing them.  They will dry fairly quickly.  Saturation while wearing will cause major all-over growth.

             3.  Buckskin is washable in cold water.  Use powdered detergent, never liquid.  Wash by hand or in a machine on delicate.  Do not wring squeeze or spin and hang to dry.  Some colors may bleed or fade, especially red or black.

             4.  Wash only if absolutely necessary.  Spot clean with a wet washcloth when possible.  After washing, finger--comb fringe.  Pull fringe/natural edges to straighten.

             5.  Keep away from high heat; it hardens the leather and ruins the thread.

             6.  Grease does not wash out but will usually wear out eventually.

             7.  Never store buckskin in plastic or anywhere even remotely damp.  It will mold or mildew, causing staining and disintegration.  Keep it folded in a wooden box that can breathe or hang in a dark, airy closet.  This applies to all leathers.  Vinegar and sunlight together will kill the fungus.

             8. Stay off asphalt if possible in moccasins; it works like sandpaper and exudes an “oil” that permeates leather and acts as an acid.  Hardwood floors and concrete are not great either.

             9.  We recommend you always wear socks with moccasins for reasons of hygiene.  You wouldn’t wear your socks every day without changing, would ya?

            10.  Buckskin does not  collect “body odor”, however things spilled on it, such as milk, will smell.  Spot clean as above.

            11.  Buckskin is not hot.  It breathes, is very comfortable in warm weather, it’s cooler than denim.  If spandex, thermals or similar are worn underneath, it can be nice and warm.

                12.  Buckskin is pretty stretchy and will take on your shape and size.  If you put on someone elses shirt, it frequently feels like a shoe on the wrong foot.  If left unworn for awhile, it will shrink up somewhat.  Just start wearing it again.

Enjoy!
